The Klas Transport Network

Black Transports

The more black transport options a Fly-away-case has to reach back to access classified resources the better. Black transports are the highways on which a Fly-away-case’s VPN traffic must travel in order to find a Secure Entry Point. The black transports often available in the field include;

  • Hotel fixed line and WiFi broadband
  • Terrestrial 3G cellphone coverage
  • VSAT
  • Inmarsat BGAN or GAN

For a Fly-away-case to be able to use any of the above black transports they must present a route on which it can follow to a suitable Secure Entry Point and draw down services. To solve this problem Klas has developed the Klas Transport Network (KTN).

KLAS Transport Network

The KTN begins inside the black router in our Fly-away-case where a FIPs 140 compliant AES-256 TRANSEC tunnel is configured to ‘find’ our customer’s Secure Entry Point over a list of black transports. These black transports all connect to a Klas 24/7 Data center. From there a Fly-away-case’s VPN traffic is routed on to its destination Secure Entry Point. This allows Klas Fly-away-case connect to BGAN, GAN, VSAT, 3G and hotel broadband without the need for a field operator reconfiguring the kit or any changes at a customer’s Secure Entry Point. Klas is continuously striving to add more black transport options onto the KTN. New options, once added, instantly become available to our customers, further expanding their reach back options.

Network monitoring, support and redundancy

All Fly-away-cases and Secure Entry Points on the KTN are remotely monitored by the Klas 24/7 Data Center. Active monitoring of network nodes enables our technical support staff to identify and resolve connection issues before they affect mission critical communications. In the event of a Secure Entry Point failing or being relocated the KTN facilitates an automatic rerouting of all Fly-away-case VPN traffic to a customer’s secondary Secure Entry Point. This auto-failover takes 60 seconds to occur and requires no Fly-away-case operator input. The KTN is a service available today to customers of Klas Fly-away-case and Secure Entry Point products.
