  1.0 Introduction

This document describes how to configure the KlasRouter RJ-45 Ethernet WAN port for use with emerging IP-based network architectures.  There are two options for assigning an IP Address to the Ethernet WAN port.  You can either manually assign the IP Address or use DHCP to receive the IP Address from an external source.  Also, you can edit the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) in order to optimize WAN performance by preventing larger packets from burdening the link.

  2.0 Configuration of KlasRouter

2.1 Cable Connections

Prior to beginning, ensure the following cable connections have been properly secured:

  1. Power cord is plugged in and KlasRouter is on.
  2. Control Port Cable is connected to the PCs serial port.
  3. Control Port Cable is connected to the ‘Control’ port on the front of the KlasRouter.
  4. RJ-45 Ethernet cable connected to the KlasRouter Ethernet WAN port.

2.2 Establishing a HyperTerminal Session

To configure the KlasRouter, you must establish a HyperTerminal Session between a PC and the KlasRouter. Follow the instructions in KlasRouter Application Note Q10601 to successfully establish a HyperTerminal Session and open the KlasRouter Main Configuration Menu.

2.3 Assigning the IP Address through DHCP

  1. Enter ‘4’ on the Main Configuration Menu to start the Ethernet WAN Configuration Menu.
  2. Enter ‘1’ on the WAN Configuration Menu to configure the IP Address using DHCP.
  3. As part of the DHCP sequence, the external DHCP Server will give KlasRouter the IP Address of a default gateway to incorporate into the IP routing table.  As shown in Figure 1, the DHCP configuration will prompt you to accept or deny this default gateway.  If you accept, all outbound traffic destined for networks other than those specified by the IP routing table will be routed to this IP Address.  Enter ‘y’ to accept the default gateway or ‘n’ to deny it.

  1. Press ‘Enter’ to return to the Ethernet WAN Configuration Menu.

2.4 Manually Assigning the IP Address

  1. Enter ‘2’ on the WAN Configuration Menu to manually configure the IP Address.
  2. You will be prompted to enter the WAN IP address and subnet mask.  Following the example from Figure 2 below, the Ethernet WAN IP Address is 192.168.10.1 with a subnet mask of 24.  Enter the IP address and subnet mask using decimal notation by typing ‘192.168.10.1/24.’ (Note: Your configuration may use a different IP address and subnet mask.)

  1. Press ‘Enter’ to return to the Ethernet WAN Configuration Menu.

2.5 Editing the Ethernet WAN MTU

  1. Enter ‘3’ on the WAN Configuration Menu to edit the Ethernet WAN MTU.
  2. You will be prompted to enter the MTU size in bytes, as shown in Figure 3.
